Cold Enough for Snow by Jessica Au

Read this if you're pondering your relationship with your Mum. The things you've never said, but both understand. 

This book is nearly impossible to describe. It's about Japan. It's about travel. It's about a mother and daughter. But mostly, it's about atmosphere ... the kind that settles over you like snow, quiet and transforming.

Jessica the author took some of the same classes as me at Uni, and when her book won the Prime Minister's Literary Award for Fiction, I knew I had to read it. What I found was a book that evokes such a beautiful sense of place and the unsaid. It taps into much of how I feel about my own mother, how closeness isn't always about words, how love is shown in actions, how everything important happens in the spaces between what's spoken.

The writing is minimalist, almost meditative. There's barely any plot.
