What this book gave me: proof that showing up every day matters.

I grew up swimming competitively. Up before dawn, lap after lap around the pool, chasing something I couldn't quite name. It was a love-hate situation, but mostly love. Meditative and painful. The kind of discipline that teaches you what it means to be elite at something, even if you never quite get there.

When I saw this title, I wanted that feeling back. The clarity that comes from repetitive motion, the quiet conversation you have with yourself when your body is working and your mind roaming free.

This was my first Murakami. I didn't know what to expect. Part memoir, part meditation, part training log. Some people found this book pointless (on Goodreads!) I found it exactly what I needed.

The thing that hit me hardest: even when you're elite, you still feel the pain. The difference is they've learned to work with it. If you're reaching for something and it feels too far, start with this book. The pain is part of it. The showing up is what counts.
